A tagok kilétérõl nincs konkrét információ, csak néhány szóbeszéd kering. A legelterjedtebb az, hogy az együttest Hasjarl és Shaxul hozták létre 1998-ban, miután az elõzõ bandájuk a Hirilorn feloszlott. 2003-ban Shaxul helyére Mikko Aspa (Clandestine Blaze,Stabat Mater, stb.) lépett az énekesi pozícióba.A Deathspell Omega zenéje az 1999-es demotól a 2002-es Inquisitors Of Satan nagylemezig eléggé nyers black metal volt, viszont Mikko Aspa csatlakozásával és a 2004-es Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice lemez kiadásával a zenekar valami teljesen újat hozott létre, sokan avantgarde black metalnak nevezik õket.
