Summoning

A Summoning 1993 -ban alakult Michael Gregor, Richard Lederer és Alexander Trondl (más néven: Silenius, Protector és Trifixion) által. Korábban mindhárman doom és progressive metal bandákban játszottak, de összeültek és számos demo felvétel mellett elkészítették elsõ albumukat a Lugburz-ot. Az album egész jól fogyott a boltokban, viszont Silenius és Protector kirúgta a dobos Trifixion-t, aki "egy üzletben gondolkodó seggfej" volt szerintük. A banda nem akart másik dobos után nézni, így maradt a jó öreg sample gép, vagyis elõre programozták dobokat (olyasmi mint az elektronikus mûfajoknál csak ez mégis "emberibb"). A második albumuk, a Minas Morgul már hangzásában és témájában is eltért a kezdeti Lugburz-tól. A Lugburz nyers és tömör black metal volt, míg a Minas Morgul már kifinomultabb, lassabb, epikusabb és "fantasy-sebb" lett, és végülis ez máig a "Summoning-hangzás". A srácok atmoszférikus black metal-t játszanak hivatalosan, de valaki nagyon találóan Tolkien metálnak nevezte a Summoning mûfaját. Való igaz, az elsõ album és a késõbbi Stronghold albumon kívül az összes számuk a J.R.R. Tolkien által kitalált Gyûrûk Ura legendára épül fel: megfigyelhetõ ez a dalok és albumok címében (Minas Morgul, Ungolianth) és a dalszövegekben is. ("A New Power Is Rising" címû szám eleje: "Ash nazg stb.."). A zenéjüket hallgatva elég nehéz elhinni, hogy mindössze 2 ember mûve. A számaik kegyetlen jók, epikusak, habár valóban lassabbak, mint a 'sima' black metal. A dobgép miatt egy kisebbfajta monotonitás is jellemzi a számaikat, illetve a gitár riffek gyakran egyhangú zúgásnak tûnnek, de ezt bõven ellensúlyozza a többi rész, fõleg a zongora (szintetizátor -.-) tesz ki magáért. Vokális téren is jól teljesít Protector, száraz hörgései megadják a kellõ hangulatot.
